Most people don't realize it, but writing doesn't come out of a maelstrom of thought. That's where the ideas come from. The actual writing is done from the calm at the center. It requires a certain mental stillness.

Wow. Would that more writing was done this way. I'm thinking of so many off the cuff, quick response pieces. Twitter, Facebook, even blogging sometimes strikes me as not-thought-out writing. Stillness, quiet. It seems people fear it. Perhaps we don't feel alive without the background noise. The tv, the radio, other people. Deep thought there, Miss Susan.
Being alone, quiet, going solo, it does seem like these things strike fear in the heart of many. Also an issue of going deeper. I like flash fiction, the quick scribble often has what Woolf called the diamonds in the dustheap, but I think the shaped, layered story is still the thing to aim for...
