Happy Birthday, Mom

One of my favorite pictures of my Mom - it is in a frame propped up on my dresser (and if you saw my dresser, you would understand that it sometimes gets lost in the mix) and I think it's a stand-out photo. For one, she looks relaxed and carefree and very cool Mama in the spiffy glasses - and while that was not an alien vibe, she did not love having a camera aimed at her for the most part. She has been gone since 2005 and not a week goes by where I don't think to call her about something. I read an interview somewhere where the person was asked if they could have an hour of anything, no matter how wild or fantastic, what they would choose - and they answered - one more hour with my mother. I think that's just about right.

I am so blessed to still have both parents. Your post brought to mind the old Gospel song, "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child." A very poignant image.

A couple of weeks ago, I was vising a dear friend who lost her mother several years ago, and last year lost her father. We were reminiscing about our childhoods, talking and laughing, and suddenly she burst into tears and sobbed uncontrollabbly for several minutes. When she was able to speak again, she said, "I just realized. Now that both my parents are gone, I'm an orphan."

Very glamorous Lois! Close to how I remember her.

A friend told me after she lost both her parents that it is a feeling you do not understand until you experience it - that deep level of loss - and it really is true, sadly. That orphan on earth feeling is very strange.
