Corn Howdy

Down the road from us, pretty standard suburban neighborhood, some folks have planted corn.  I bet many more people than just me get the same kick driving by it every day.

I love it! A few years ago when my son was younger, he wanted to plant corn in our small backyard garden. So we did. It was a 4 x 3 plant patch. I used to call it our little corn field. We even got a few ears of corn to eat. Very funny and fun.

This all serves to remind me I need to buy some good summer corn :)

Is it unusual for there to be suburban vegetable gardens?

No, but they are usually in a little part of the yard and almost always in the back. Only in the last year or two have I seen people putting vegetables in the front yard - one neighbor has a brilliant productive assortment of tomato plants around their mailbox. I just read a think about Canadians getting in trouble for front yard gardens...ah, here it is, absurd rules, yes? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/20/illegal-kitchen-garden_n_1687558.html

read a thing... although read a think has possibilities. And I would plant a garden in our front if not for the massive elm that swallows the sunlight even after being trimmed. We have the same problem in the back, shade shade shade. Our veggies do not grow.
