I read this when you first posted it, but didn't have a chance to write a comment. I just went and read it again. A perfect, perfect poem. You must be feeling better to be able to write such beauty. You have such a gift. I love the description of winter. It is exactly right. And I love 'hopelessly storybooked minds.' I bet no one in the history of writing has ever said those words. I've heard that scream a very few times in our almost 36 years here. It is possibly a bobcat? Or possibly the cougar that the Fish and Game Dept. isn't around here? Or maybe it is a fox, though I've seen only one.

Thank you, Nan! I never considered a bobcat. I once had a taxicab driver tell me he had seen bobcat very late at night, he also said he had seen a wolf and it was most definitely not a coyote but I think it was a coyote they are big, the New York coyotes. Isn't it amazing what we can have living right near us? But I'm still thinking fox since we have them frequently here.

I realized when I read your note back to me that my questions may have sounded like they were for you, about your scream. But they were really me pondering what it could have been at my house. And I see that I left out the word 'says' after Dept. Sorry.

No worries, I am Constantly ruminating myself ( like why does my blog keep freezing up?). We had a cougar roaming quite near here two summers ago and we are about 33 miles from Manhattan!

Wow! So, just maybe, your scream was a cougar, catamount, mountain lion, panther, painter. I love all those names.
