From ghoulies and ghosties And long-leggedy beasties And things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us!

Nearly there!

One of those weeks where I feel I am just crawling towards the weekend, so dreadfully tired and wrung out. Nearly there, just one day, and it's a real weekend coming up too - not one of my fake twice a month weekends where I have to work Saturday and the weekend is kaboshed.
Meanwhile, before October gets away from me, some October photos of one of our family a traditions in October -a run up to Easton, Ct for fun at Silverman's farm.

Eye spy some cool stuff

A very cool storefront/doctor's office in Ridgefield, Ct - who wouldn't want to go to someone with such a groovy vibe? Tonight, a nice ushering in of autumn despite the too-warm weather - listening to Neil Gaiman read from his fantastic The Graveyard Book, chapter one this evening, lovely, you really get pulled in. Quite in line with that, some mythical stamps that I wish we had around here to grace our envelopes - paying the bills would be a good deal more enticing. You don't need to speak the language to enjoy this writing artist's site, and as with last year, I have been enjoying the wonderful holiday FREE offerings from the insanely talented Toymaker - children in the library adore her printed pumpkin face sheets where you can cut out the eyes and mouth and make your own spooky window art to hang. Hope you're starting to feel halloweeny :)

to never catching up

The house is not the clean and organized house I would hope for, the bills I meant to get to remain in the basket, library books to return, winter clothes waiting to be hauled out, summer clothes taking up space, where are my shoes/glasses/that book/that receipt/the thingy I need/the to do list/my phone/my purse? Kids here and there, dog young and ridiculous, dog completely dotty, ancient and underfoot. Things I meant to do, send, write, achieve, move into the house of the neverdone. And as I am winding up the little tickytock talk of shoulda coulda in my head, I pause and think how lucky I am to have such absurdly full days, so rich and bursting with activities and people and things to do and places to get to that I will never catch up. How wonderful to never catch up.
Photos of dreamy homescapes, not my jumble house but the Anthropologie in Westport, on our last weekend jaunt; my youngest gazing out the door yearning to be free...just one minute more, one sec, just going to look at one more thing, I promise!

How to Age Gracefully

Become something painted in layers, in colors that will compliment when they begin to chip and peel, timeworn and faded, preferably by salt-flecked winds and four vivid seasons, yearly, over decades of time. Age like paint, like old wood, like stones and dirt and sand. Without thought or regret, without fear or pain, without consideration for the next thing.

Sunday Quote

If there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow human being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.

Centennial Celebration PSA

An afterwork trek into NYC where the eagle statue from my standpoint in the taxicab line looked like a Jurassic Park raptor waiting to pounce. Long line outside the Cooper Union hall as well, worth the hour wait: Poetry Society of America's centennial program with a remarkable handful of poet laureates reading including Charles Simic reading one of my favorite poems (when he walked near me after the reading, it took great self-control to not rush over like some crazed loon and gush. I contented myself with feeling THRILLED to be a few feet away. Let others have their Hollywood - give me poets any day of the week). All the poets were wonderful and Natalie Merchant was fantastic, performing songs from her amazing Leave Your Sleep collection, very moving.
Did not partake of any goodies from Magnolia Bakery in Grand Central Station but enjoyed the skill of the baker while waiting for my train home.

Capturing some Autumn

Road trek a bit up north for a change of scenery, the air was cooler, the leaves were a week or two ahead of our trees, nice to drive around when the youngest is on a play date so it's just the husband and me - no one asking "are we there yet?" when to us the whole point is the drive not the destination.

Sunday Quote

The artist is a receptacle for the emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web.

Bewitched kitty cats

Beyond charmed at the grocery store when I came across this plant. As I have tried to explain to my youngest child, it is a plant of bewitched children who were turned into cats but the spell went awry and they accidentally became plants. Cat plants. The child just rolled his eyes, 11 years of my nonsense and he is as jaded as his sibs. According to the little marker in the dirt, this is actually something called a decorative millet plant. The ones online are called ornamental millets, same deal, but the decorative spikes do not curl in the enticing way this one does. To the touch, it has the unnerving firmness and feel of a true cat's tail...which just proves my original theory of bewitched children. At least the skeleton hanging around on the hose concurs.

a five photos walk

A leaf we initially thought was a butterfly, hedges trimmed by Edward Scissorhands, a dramatic suburban sky, S is for sewer (but of course is also for Susan!), and the glow of dusk in a curbside stream. Not bad for a pre-dinner stroll.

Rainbows, all sorts

Someone suggested we try the Bronxville farmer's market some Saturday morning - so we did ... came home with honey and lettuces and maple spread and peach and blueberry pie and lots more - and best - photos, of course. Loved the yarns at one table - Maupston Design Studio where she was spinning the wool, very fairy tale fine, and it almost made me want to take up knitting so gorgeous the results but I remain traumatized by my knitting class back in my Brooklyn days...think I will stick to poetry and photography, seem to work for me. Love the veggies, yes? Scroll down for all (someday I will learn how to post all snaps in one entry).
